Sarandë sits where the Albanian mountains meet the Ionian Sea — and on a calm summer evening,
with Corfu visible across the water, a dinner here becomes something more than just a meal.
This is a practical guide to making that evening work: which wines to choose, which dishes
pair best with them, and what to know before you arrive at our terrace.

The terrace: where the evening starts.

Our open terrace faces the Ionian Sea directly. There are no interior walls between your
table and the water. In summer, the sun sets behind the Albanian hills around 20:30 —
the light turns the sea gold for about twenty minutes. That is the window to be seated.

We operate walk-in only. Sea view tables are first come, first served. For a romantic
evening, arrive between 19:30 and 20:00. The front row fills quickly, but even the second
row has a clear sightline to the water. After dinner, the shisha terrace stays open until
02:00 — a natural way to extend the evening without moving anywhere.

Practical tip

Arriving at sunset gives you the best light and the best chance of a front-row table.
We do not take reservations for individual tables — the sea view cannot be held in advance,
which means it genuinely goes to whoever is there first.

Albanian wines: what to order and why.

Albania has been producing wine since antiquity — Shesh i Zi and Shesh i Bardhë are
indigenous grape varieties found nowhere else in the world. They are not well known
outside the country, which makes them one of the better discoveries of a trip to the
Albanian Riviera. Below is what we carry and what each one does on the table.

Albanian Red
Shesh i Zi

Full-bodied, dark fruit, slightly earthy. The grape is unique to Albania — you will not find this variety anywhere else.

Lamb, grilled meat, moussaka
Albanian White
Shesh i Bardhë

Crisp and aromatic. Dry finish with mineral notes — genuinely good with Ionian seafood.

Seabass, gravlax salmon, mussels
Rosé
Rosé Wine

Light, fresh, slightly floral. The most versatile choice for a shared evening — works across starters, seafood and pasta.

House Wine

Red or white — our house selection. A good option if you want to try both styles without committing to a bottle.

A note on pairing

The general principle is simple: white and rosé with fish and lighter starters, red with
grilled meat and clay-baked dishes. If you are sharing — which most couples do — rosé
is the practical choice because it sits comfortably across the whole menu.
If you want one bottle for the whole table and are unsure, ask us when you arrive.

Dishes for two: what to order on a special evening.

Several dishes on our menu are designed for sharing. Below are the ones that
work particularly well for a romantic dinner — a natural sequence from starters
through to something sweet.

Elegant — Solo fish
Grilled Seabass — Ionian
Whole fresh-caught seabass, flame-grilled simply. The most elegant single-dish order for a quieter, cleaner evening.

Albanian Signature
Tavë Kosi
Lamb baked in clay pots with yogurt, rice and garlic inside our oak wood-oven. Takes over an hour. If you want the one dish that every Albanian family serves on a special occasion — this is it.

Finish with this
Trilece
Soft sponge soaked in three milks, dark caramel on top. Albania’s most loved dessert. Simple, quiet, and very good. Share it.

After dinner: the shisha terrace.

After the kitchen closes, the terrace does not. Our shisha lounge opens at 17:00 and
runs until 02:00. If you have a good table with the sea in front of you, there is no
reason to leave. Order a shisha, keep the wine going, and let the evening run as long
as it wants to.

The Ionian at night is quieter and darker than during the day — you can see the lights
of Corfu across the water. It is a different kind of atmosphere than the sunset, and
just as worth staying for.

Questions couples usually ask

Do I need to reserve a table for a romantic dinner at Sophra?

No — and we cannot take individual reservations during peak season. Tables go to whoever arrives first. For a front-row sea view, come between 19:30 and 20:00. For a special occasion (proposal, anniversary), WhatsApp us in advance so we can note it.

What wine goes best with Albanian food?

Shesh i Zi (red) for lamb and grilled meat. Shesh i Bardhë (white) for seafood. Rosé for a mixed evening when you are sharing multiple dishes. All three are Albanian varieties — unique to this country.

What is the best dish for a romantic dinner at Sophra?

The Seafood Grill Mix for 2 is the most natural sharing dish. If you want something uniquely Albanian, Tavë Kosi — lamb in clay pot from the wood-oven — is what every Albanian family orders on a special evening. Finish with Trilece.

Is Sophra a good restaurant for a date night in Sarandë?

It is a genuine family-run restaurant with a direct sea view, not a tourist-facing setup. The terrace is open-air, the kitchen is visible, and the food is traditional Albanian. If that combination works for you, yes — it tends to make for a memorable evening.
